Understanding the Types of Sex Lubricants
Sex lubricants are very important to comfortable intercourse and adult toy play. This is because the lubricants help with what your body is supposed to do naturally. In fact, did you know that lack of lubrication is the top reason that condoms break? As you can see, it’s a safety issue as well.
The good news is that there are a wide range of personal and sexual lubricants available on the market so it’s possible for you to find the right ones for your needs. First you just need to know a little about the different types and what they are for.
Here are the basic types of sex lubricants:
- Water based
- Oil based
- Silicone based
- Specialty lubricants
- Anal lubricants
The names basically explain what they are but here is an additional overview. Water based lubricants are the most commonly available in stores and shops. They are water-soluble and absorb into the skin. This also means that they can dry out the skin when used often. They can sometimes dry out during use but adding more water or lubricant can re-activate them. Water based lubricants cannot be used in the water as they would dissolve or disperse.
Then there are oil-based lubricants which also have their pros and cons. Oil based lubricants were created due to a need by women who complained about irritation and dryness from water based lubricants. These do not contain the drying agent, glycerin and many are made from organic materials.
Silicone lubricants are unique from the other types out there and will not absorb into the skin. They remain on the skin, giving a better glide and slide sensation and experience. However, not all of them are designed for safety with condoms so you should look out for this. They are also not recommended for silicone-based sex toys so watch for this as well.
Specialty lubricants include those with flavors for oral sex or warming agents to help stimulate the sexual parts. Some increase blood flow to the area which can heighten the sensations of arousal. Then of course, anal specific lubricants are made for anal sex or anal play. They are usually thicker and more like a gel than a liquid. Some of them will also contain a numbing agent to make anal play more comfortable.
Just remember if there is a numbing agent in the gel that it will numb every body part it comes into contact with. Knowing and understanding the types of sex lubricants will help you choose the right one for you and your specific needs.
